Charlotte's Story - CoreKids

“Sounds awful but there were times when I thought of my son, Michael, as a burden. He would be crying all the time and I didn’t know how to make him stop, so I’d just leave him to cry. He was nearly two at the time and was hardly speaking and he used to hit and bite me and other kids.

“I used to be a heavy drinker, and did loads of coke too, just like my Mum did. I was worried about following in her footsteps, and didn’t feel like I was a good parent. I hadn’t put any routine in Michael’s life, he didn’t sleep, didn’t really eat properly, I was too wrapped up in my own problems, or too out of it.

“I went to The Core Trust’s day programme about six months ago. It wasn’t easy but I stopped drinking and doing drugs. After being there for two weeks I first went to CoreKids. I had loads of support, practical and emotional. They taught me lots about being a good parent, they gave me advice on how I could play with Michael, interact with him, encourage him.

“After four months the change was unbelievable. He responded so well. I play with him every night, and read to him too. I got him into a nursery and he’s playing with the other kids, and he’s starting to talk now. Every night he tells me he loves me and gives me a cuddle. I can’t say the words for how I feel about him now, and what I’d do for him. He’s my little bundle of joy. CoreKids has helped me to change my life and change my son’s life too. I’m so grateful for the opportunity I’ve had.

"I'm looking at starting college courses soon and want to volunteer with youth offenders. I can now look forward to being the best parent I can."
