Robert's Story

“I had been drinking since 1989. I was in a band and while we were on tour there’d be a party every night. I’d come home after touring and carry on that lifestyle. Waking up and drinking beer and vodka all day long. Getting up the next day and doing the same. People around me couldn’t live with what I had become and five years ago I broke up with the mother of my child.

“Over the years there were lots of times I thought I was drinking too much, but denial would always kick in and stop me from facing my problem.

“Towards the end of 2007 things reached a crisis, my life was a mess. I was cut off from everyone, including myself. That’s when I looked for help and I was offered a choice of where to go. Core appealed to me partly because they aren’t 12-step and personally that doesn’t fit with my beliefs, but also because of the atmosphere there. I was made to feel at home very quickly.

“The work that I did at Core was very intense, at times it wasn’t easy. It’s great that you can get lots of alternative therapies and these are essential in the mix of therapy. They balance out the more stressful parts of the programme.

“I’ve not had a drink for seven months. With the dedication of the staff and my peers, it’s been a wonderful experience, I realise now there’s a life without drink and substances. Without Core, I would still be where I was. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I‘ve been given.”
